چکیده

In this paper, we consider a decision-maker facing a financial risk flanked by a background risk, possibly non-financial, such as health or environmental risk. A decision has to be made about the amount of an investment (in the financial dimension) resulting in a future benefit either in the same dimension (savings) or in the other dimension (environmental quality or health improvement). In the first case, we show that the optimal amount of savings decreases as the pair of risks increases in the bivariate increasing concave dominance rules of higher degrees which express the common preferences of all the decision-makers whose two-argument utility function possesses direct and cross derivatives fulfilling some specific requirements. Roughly speaking, the optimal amount of savings decreases as the two risks become “less positively correlated” or marginally improve in univariate stochastic dominance. In the second case, a similar conclusion on optimal investment is reached under alternative conditions on the derivatives of the utility function.

Risk Aversion and Risk Premiums with Dependent Risks

By using a general bivariate utility function, this paper provides the conditions under which agents would like to remove primary risk in the presence of other dependent risk. For small risks, the conditions for retaining primary risk along with other dependent risk are also provided. The results of this paper indicate that the risk attitude to primary risk depends not only on the dependence re...

Identifiability of bivariate frailty models

Frailty models are used in survival analysis to account for unobserved heterogeneity in individual risks to disease and death. To analyze bivariate data on related survival times (e.g. matched pairs experiments, twin or family data), bivariate correlated frailty models were suggested, where the frailties were constructed using independent additive components. The purpose of this paper is to des...

Nonparametric association analysis of multivariate competing risks data

While nonparametric analyses of bivariate failure times under independent censoring have been widely studied, nonparametric analyses of bivariate competing risks data have not been investigated. Such analyses are important in familial association studies, where multiple interacting failure types may violate the independent censoring assumption. We develop nonparametric estimators for the bivari...

Optimal level sets for representing a bivariate density function

We deal with the problem of representing a bivariate density function by level sets. The choice of which levels are used in this representation are commonly arbitrary (most usual choices being those with probability contents .25, .5 and .75). Choosing which level is (or which levels are) of most interest is an important practical question which depends on the kind of problem one has to deal wit...

A Model for Sharing the Costs of Uncontrollable Risks among Contracting Parties

The allocation of risks among the contracting parties in a contract is an important decision affecting the project success. Some risks in a project are uncontrollable; these are imposed to a project by external factors. Since contracting parties can neither control nor affect the occurrence of such risks, their allocation to a party would be inequitable. Therefore the cost overrun related to un...
